BOILER INSTALLATION FAQs
How much could you save on central heating systems?
Heating accounts for about 55% of what you spend in a year on energy bills. Energy-efficient boilers make a big difference in cost. Modern boilers are more efficient for several reasons, but their main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers.
All well-maintained boilers burn their fuel very efficiently, but they inevitably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. A condensing boiler has a bigger heat exchanger, so it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue and is more efficient.
What type of boiler do your Gas Safe engineers recommend?
If it’s time to change your boiler, the first step is to decide what type you need. There are three main types of condensing boilers: combi boilers, system boilers, and regular boilers.
Choosing a new boiler can seem daunting and confusing, but we aim to make this process as simple as possible. Our senior engineers promise to visit your property personally and take the time to assess and discuss your needs, ensuring your new boiler perfectly matches your requirements.
Which type of condensing boiler suits my home?
Every client’s needs differ based on the number of bathrooms, the number of people in the household, and the individual’s lifestyle requirements. For example, two or more people showering at the same time.
The best option for you will depend on various factors, such as:
-
Hot Water Usage: A large family that uses a lot of hot water could be better off with a system or a regular boiler.
-
Installation Space: A combi boiler doesn’t require a hot water cylinder, so it takes up less space. The Worcester Compact range can fit inside a standard kitchen cupboard.
How quickly can your heating engineers install a boiler?
Usually, within 24 hours of quote acceptance, subject to stock availability and a completed survey.
Will you remove my old boiler?
We safely decommission and recycle your old appliance in line with WEEE regulations, no extra charge.
Will a hydrogen-ready boiler work on natural gas?
Absolutely. The models we fit run efficiently on today’s natural gas and will automatically adapt to a future 20 % hydrogen blend.
How much should a new boiler and installation cost?
Replacing your combi boiler or system boiler all depends on the features and the actual boiler make. The boiler’s output can also affect the price, as higher-rated, more powerful boilers are generally more expensive. The cost of labour will also have to be factored in.
Can a plumber install a boiler?
When installing a new gas boiler, you must employ an actual Gas and Heating engineer. Although a plumber can work on the pipework and radiators that make up your central heating system, they mustn’t work on the gas pipe or the boiler. The heating engineer needs to be Gas Safe registered.
How long does it take to install a boiler?
On average, 1-3 days. We have carried out full boiler replacements within one day, but each installation is different. Factors including location, new flue, and old and new pipework will all have to be taken into account, along with the complexity of the job.
When you book a boiler quote, we will gain a better understanding of your requirements and be able to give you an estimate of the time involved.
How long do low-carbon footprint boilers last?
Like all mechanical systems, a well-maintained and up-to-date boiler service will ensure that your boiler lasts for at least 15 years, even longer, with modern, quality boilers on the market today.
Warranties are always worth paying close attention to, and with up to 12 years on some of our ranges, this will give you peace of mind for years to come.
Do I need new radiators with a new boiler?
Not necessarily. When you book us for a home visit, this will be part of our home survey. Let the team know if you’ve been having issues with the radiators, such as cold spots, taking a long time to heat, etc.
How do you know when your boiler needs replacing?
1. Radiators take longer than usual to heat up
2. There is a bad smell coming from the boiler
3. Increase in your energy bills
4. Leaky Boiler
5. Strange or unusual noises coming from the central heating boiler

Do you cover outskirts like Musselburgh or Queensferry?
We cover all EH postcodes at no extra cost. We also cover areas outside of Edinburgh and have been to the borders and Kinross recently.
Can I keep my existing smart thermostat?
In most cases, yes. If you wish to keep it, we’ll reconnect and test it.
What happens if my pipework or radiators are clogged?
A full chemical power-flush is included with premium packages. Severe sludge issues are identified during the survey, so any additional work is costed up front.
Is a boiler survey mandatory?
Yes. A virtual photo survey or in-person visit is required to size the boiler correctly and ensure full Gas Safe compliance.
Do I need to upgrade my gas pipe to 22 mm?
Only if the current 15 mm run cannot supply the required flow, we pressure-test during the survey and quote for any needed upgrade.
Is a MagnaCleanse or magnetic filter worth it?
Yes. A magnetic filter captures sludge, protects the heat exchanger and is a requirement for many manufacturer warranties.
What are SEDBUK and ErP efficiency ratings?
SEDBUK, which stands for Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK, is a boiler-efficiency metric developed specifically for the UK and is not a Europe‑wide standard.
Across Europe, including the UK, manufacturers now normally describe boiler efficiency using the ErP (Energy‑related Products) framework, which expresses seasonal space‑heating efficiency as both a percentage and an A–G energy label.
Modern condensing gas boilers that comply with current UK requirements (including those installed in Scotland) are typically A‑rated under ErP, with seasonal space‑heating efficiencies generally in the 92–94% range under standard test conditions, rather than the older 88–92% figures often associated with legacy SEDBUK documentation.
